A major increase in the number of affordable and for rent houses in the Borders has been recommended. The Affordable Housing Need report for the region has said new developments should be made to provide up to 30% of such accommodation.
In the past the authority has operated with a requirement level of about 10% for private housing projects.
The report will go before the council's executive committee and then be put out to consultation.
The recommended levels of affordable housing in the report vary across the Scottish Borders.
It ranges from 15% in North Ettrick and Lauderdale to 30% in Tweeddale, South Roxburghshire and the Central Borders.
The changes have been recommended in order to tackle a huge shortfall in affordable housing which has emergedover the past 10 years.
