The union has vowed to fight for the MA Cashmere workforce
A union leader has vowed to fight for funds owed to workers at a collapsed Borders textile firm.

MA Cashmere in Innerleithen closed recently with the loss of 23 jobs.

Tony Trench of the Transport and General Workers' Union said there were a number of issues outstanding after the shock closure.

The union is seeking to start discussions immediately in order to get the best deal possible for the "extremely loyal" workforce.

"The receivers have been called in and we are waiting for a name for someone for us to deal with," said Mr Trench.

"Our members were told on 29 August that there was no more work.

"There was no pre-warning to this whatsoever."

The union representative said that 19 of the 23 workers were TGWU members, with more than 300 years of employment with the firm between them.

"They have been an extremely loyal workforce," he said.

"The TGWU will not be leaving any stone unturned and every penny that is due to our members will be fought for and will be got."
