More jobs lost at knitwear firm
Hawick town centre
The company says the move is good news for Hawick
Thirty jobs are to go at Hawick knitwear firm John Laing despite a buyout by Dawson International.

About 50 of the 95 staff were made redundant in January when the company went into receivership.

The latest reduction leaves only 13 workers who will transfer to the Barrie factory in Burnfoot, joining most of the company's 162-strong workforce.

The firm says the move will preserve an historic business name and is the best solution in difficult circumstances.

Dawson has bought the stock, order book and label, but not Laing's Slitrig Crescent premises.

"The good news for Hawick really is that we have managed to acquire this business," said Dawson executive chairman Mike Hartley.

The alternative was to break up the business and sell off the parts separately. This is perhaps the best that could be achieved in the circumstances

"The business was in receivership - it made big losses for a number of years.

"By us buying the business we will be able to keep John Laing going as a business," he added.

Mr Hartley confirmed, however, that business would continue on a very reduced basis.

"We will be retaining the employment of some people - albeit sadly not a huge number of people," he said.

"The alternative was to break up the business and sell off the parts separately.

"This is perhaps the best that could be achieved in the circumstances."
