Police have released the name of a driver who died in a crash on the A75 near Dumfries after failing to stop for an unmarked police car.

William Kerr Handley, 70, of the Dumfries area, was killed in the accident east of the Collin bypass.

Officers tried to stop his grey Nissan Bluebird at about 1320 BST on Friday.

A short time later he was killed in a collision with a Skoda Octavia. Three other people were taken to Dumfries Infirmary for treatment.

The road in the area was blocked for some time.

Police said an investigation would take place and a report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

Police have appealed for anyone who saw the grey Nissan Bluebird on the A75 in the time leading up to the crash to contact them.
