Tesco frontage proposal welcomed
The former Galashiels textile college
The council welcomed plans to preserve the famous frontage
Scottish Borders Council has welcomed plans by Tesco to preserve the frontage of a former textiles college while building a new store in Galashiels.

The current government buildings will still be demolished but the company has pledged to rebuild the Edwardian facade in another location in the town.

It has been suggested it may be incorporated in a housing development.

Council leader David Parker said the authority would be happy to discuss potential sites with Tesco.

Campaigners in the town have been fighting to preserve the building for some time.

Mr Parker welcomed the commitment to rebuild the front of the property at another location.

'Suitable site'

"Tesco as a developer has stated that it can be incorporated as part of a housing or other commercial development," he said.

"The onus is now on Tesco to find and negotiate a suitable site and to undertake or facilitate a commercial development.

"The council will be happy to provide pre-application planning advice as to the suitability of potential sites.

"The council looks forward to a formal approach by Tesco."
