A new sub committee will drive forward regeneration
Planning leaders have promised "less talk and more action" in the regeneration of Dumfries town centre.

It comes after the creation of a new council sub committee to drive forward developments in the town.

A dedicated regeneration officer has already been appointed to deal with the day-to-day progress of the project.

The committee was set up to work in conjunction with a range of partners and the public to direct the range of improvements needed.

The remit and powers of the committee, which will be made up of council members, will be decided at a future full council meeting.

Councillor George McBurnie, chair of the council's planning and environment committee, said the new group would deliver visible results.

Key regeneration issues

Nith corridor developments
Dock Park study
Midsteeple/Greyfriars
Friars Vennel improvements

"This sub committee will allow us to drive the regeneration of Dumfries town centre forward with less talk and more action," he said.

"The regeneration of the town is a high priority, the studies which have been carried out such as Gillespies' Urban Design Study need to be put into action.

"This will require a partnership approach with the private sector heavily involved.

"Public sector investment should pave the way, making Dumfries town centre an attractive prospect for potential investors."

Members also agreed at the planning and environment committee that the sub committee would look at issues relating to parking within the town centre.
