Traders object to market proposal
Dumfries town centre
Town centre traders have objected to the market plans
An attempt to make an open-air Saturday market in Dumfries permanent has provoked objections from traders.

The event has gone ahead for six years with temporary permission but now Town Dynamics is seeking approval on a longer-term basis.

Shop owners in the town have objected to the market selling goods which are on sale at stores in Dumfries.

Planners are recommending that the market be given an extension of approval to run for another year.

Representations claim that the markets detract from the town centre.

In addition they say many of the stalls are selling retail goods which are obtainable in local shops.

One objector stresses that empty shops and a "tatty" market do not present a positive picture to potential investors or visitors.

Officials are recommending that, with the town centre regeneration strategy at an early stage, the operator should be given a further extension for a year.
