New director headed Brandon team

Aberdeen's new director of social care and wellbeing was the head of children's services in Dundee at the time of toddler Brandon Muir's killing.

The case sparked a review of child protection services as it emerged that social workers had been alerted to concerns over Brandon.

Fred McBride, 48, will take up the new post in the summer.

Robert Cunningham was jailed for 10 years after being found guilty of 23-month-old Brandon's culpable homicide.

Brandon's post-mortem examination report noted up to 40 injuries including bruises, scratches and four fractured ribs.

There has still be to be a report on the review.

Asked by BBC Scotland if Mr McBride's role in the Brandon Muir case was discussed, the convenor of Aberdeen City Council's selection panel, Cllr Kevin Stewart, said: "The panel did discuss that, the panel did not see that as a major issue.

"The process was extremely rigorous indeed.

"The investigation is a matter for Dundee, not Aberdeen City Council."

Mr McBride said: "This move is an exciting opportunity for me and I look forward to taking up this role at Aberdeen City Council."

Chief executive Sue Bruce said: "His skills and experience will be an asset to the council as the new structure takes shape."
