The president of Mexico has travelled to Aberdeen as part of his state visit to the UK.

Felipe Calderon visited BP's headquarters and also met oil and gas engineers from Mexico who are studying at Aberdeen University.

North Sea companies have been increasingly taking advantage of opportunities in the Gulf of Mexico.

Mr Calderon, who will be attending the G20 summit this week, was a guest at Buckingham Palace on Monday.

The president and his wife Margarita Zavala were greeted by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in Horse Guards Parade.

They also met Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Foreign Secretary David Miliband and Home Secretary Jacqui Smith.

Mr Calderon said the two leaders had agreed that UK and Mexico would jointly explore "opportunities of economic co-operation" in sectors such as electronics and communications, and energy.

He said: "Mexico has a robust programme to attract investment in renewable energy sector.

"British companies will always be welcome, in particular because they are internationally recognised given their efficiency and technological advancement," he said.
