Talks to begin the process of finding a solution to save the closure threatened Inverurie Paper Mill get under way on Monday.

The start of a 90-day consultation was delayed to allow non union members among the near 400-strong workforce to elect colleagues to represent them.

International Paper earlier said its plant was unprofitable and not viable.

Lib Dem Gordon MP Malcolm Bruce told BBC Scotland he was confident the Aberdeenshire plant could be saved.

First Minister Alex Salmond, the local Gordon SNP MSP, also earlier insisted all hope was not lost.

International Paper acquired the historic mill in 1996.
