Fines over urinating and drinking

Several people have been fined for urinating in public - including on church steps - and street drinking after a clampdown in Aberdeen.

A total of 17 people received anti-social behaviour fixed penalties for urinating over the weekend, at the start of a nine-week operation.

A further five people were fined for drinking alcohol in the street.

Grampian Police Sgt Cammy Preston said: "Most of the people stopped by our officers were embarrassed and ashamed."

He added: "Seventeen people charged with urinating over a single weekend illustrates our determination to stamp out this kind of anti-social conduct.

"Whilst some may view this kind of behaviour as minor, I am sure the owners of the premises involved, which included the steps of a church, surely will not."

He said most culprits were "remorseful for their selfish behaviour".

A 21-year-old man was also charged with throwing an empty bottle from Bridge Street onto Windmill Brae.

Sgt Preston said: "The city centre has no shortage of places to drink responsibly and Aberdeen City Council have gone to great efforts to provide toilet facilities in the Union street area over the weekend so there can be no excuse for people indulging in this kind of behaviour.

"We welcome people to come into the city centre every weekend to enjoy themselves but ask that they do so with consideration for those who live and work here every day."

The ongoing operation involves uniformed officers patrolling the city centre.
