Council's chief executive departs

Douglas Paterson
Douglas Paterson decided to take early retirement from the council

Aberdeen City Council's departing chief executive is officially due to leave his post.

Douglas Paterson announced in May he was taking early retirement, as a probe began into the council's finances.

His job is being taken on in the interim by Robert Coomber, ahead of the appointment of a permanent successor later this month.

Mr Coomber led Southwark Borough Council in London until 2006 and has worked as a consultant since then.

He will lead the council until a new permanent chief executive is selected next Friday.

An expert group helping the council tackle its cutbacks has told the local authority redundancies would have to be made to make the 49.7m of savings needed.

The cutbacks have sparked several months of public protests.
