The whale had become entangled in creel ropes |
Three people have managed to save the life of a 30-tonne whale which became entangled in creel ropes off Orkney's outer isles. The humpback whale was spotted in difficulties in Holland Bay on the south side of Stronsay. Richard Groat, John Stevenson, and his daughter Louise Stevenson went to sea in the boat Sarah Jane to help. They used a hook on a pole to disentangle the whale's tail, and it then swam off into deeper water. The Scottish SPCA said it was very pleased to have the assistance of the fishing community, adding they were obviously not expected to take part in regular rescue missions.
