More fruit, cereal bars and bottled water will be on offer |
Pupils in Aberdeenshire are set to be fed a healthier diet from next term. Kitchens are already serving a healthier selection of lunches under the Hungry for Success scheme launched two years ago. New regulations will be enforced from August, tightening rules on what can be served throughout the school day. However, councillors will also this week hear the crackdown on junk food could lead to a drop in takings for canteens and tuck shops. The council said it was keen to promote healthy eating. Canteens will have to restrict the sale of fried food to no more than three times a week, with chips only available as part of a meal. There will also be chip-free and cheese-free days. Tuck shops and vending machines will offer fewer sweets and fizzy drinks, and more fruit, cereal bars and bottled water.
