Cancer fighter 'has no regrets'
Mike Gray
Mike Gray won an appeal to have his cancer drugs funded
Doctors have had to stop treating a Moray terminal cancer sufferer who fought and won a battle to win NHS funding for drug treatment.

Mike Gray, 53, from Buckie, has been told his cancer has now spread.

Mr Gray had hoped the drug cetuximab would prolong his life, but will now no longer be treated. He initially had to pay for it himself.

He told BBC Scotland he had no regrets about his campaign as he hoped that others would benefit as a result.

Mr Gray, who has terminal bowel cancer, was forced to pay 3,400 per fortnight for the drug.

The Scottish Medicines Consortium said it was not cost-effective because it could only prolong life, not cure him.

He appealed to NHS Grampian, which reversed its decision, and paid for the drugs and reimbursed his costs.

MSPs will investigate why health boards decide what kinds of drugs should be made available.

Mr Gray said: "It's ironic that after the funding, the next scan shows it's not working.

"I am confident that the Scottish Parliament are looking seriously at ways in which health boards can respond more quickly and consistently to people with terminal cancer for the funding of particular drugs which may enhance their life."
