A special council meeting next week cannot reconsider the planning application which was refused.

The leader of Aberdeenshire Council said she believed there was still a chance to keep the plan alive.

However, a spokesman for Mr Trump told BBC Scotland there were no plans for a further attempt at gaining consent.

The Trump Organisation's head of international development, George Sorial, who was returning to New York, said: "At this moment we are not considering resubmitting the plans.

"I will return for the special meeting next week and see what that brings."

Aberdeenshire Council Leader Anne Robertson said: "The council has received correspondence from the Trump Organisation's legal team and we are considering the issues raised.

"In response to the announcement that the Trump Organisation will not appeal, it's obviously disappointing but we will not give up.

"They have invested heavily in Aberdeenshire so far and I hope that they will give us time to respond."

The council leader added there were other options open to the Trump Organisation, including the right to resubmit their application and to lodge an appeal.

She said: "Ideally I'd like all 68 Aberdeenshire councillors to have the chance to debate all major planning applications which have significant implications for the economy of the north east. This will be explored at the special meeting."

She said they must learn lessons from the events of recent days and look at how they could "improve the decision-making process for determining major applications in the future".

The council leader announced that the public meeting of full council would take place on Wednesday, 12 December at 1015 GMT at Aberdeenshire Council's headquarters.

Mr Trump's representatives earlier said they would not be appealing against the committee decision last week to turn down the plans for the Menie Estate near Balmedie.

Several offers have been received from a number of landowners in the UK hoping to secure the project after the refusal.

The leadership of Aberdeen City Council has written to Aberdeenshire councillors, urging them to do all they can to get the proposed golf resort scheme back on track.
