Prisoners to sue over voting ban
Peterhead Prison
About 100 applications have so far been refused
Scores of inmates at Peterhead Prison are set to sue over the right to vote after their applications were rejected.

They have challenged the decision to bar prisoners from voting in the 3 May elections, claiming it breaches their human rights.

About 100 of these applications from inmates have so far been refused and the remaining 32 are still being processed.

They could appeal to the courts and pursue compensation claims if refused.

Sandy McConochie, the electoral registration officer for Grampian, told BBC Scotland: "The current position is that I have received a total of 132 applications from prisoners in Peterhead seeking to be registered to vote.

"I have so far dealt with 100 of these and all of them have been refused."
