Drivers warned on mobile penalty

Grampian Police said motorists will face a tougher regime
Drivers in Grampian have been reminded not to use hand held mobiles while driving - or face being hit with increased penalties.

Motorists caught from Tuesday will receive a 60 fine - double the previous amount - alongside three penalty points on their licence.

Grampian Police charged more than 1,100 drivers in connection with using mobiles illegally in 2006.

Insp Mark Cochrane said: "No call is worth putting lives at danger."

He added: "Drivers who continue to use mobile phones whilst driving in blatant disregard of the law, the safety of themselves and others will be hit hard by the new legislation.

"The accumulation of points will adversely affect their insurance premium and take them a step closer to being banned from the law abiding citizens' roads.

"We advise you simply turn your phone off and wait until you get to your destination."
