The new centre overlooks Stromness harbour

The new building will house a collection of works which chart the development of modern art in Britain.

The centre was founded in 1979 by the late Margaret Gardiner who died in 2005, aged 100.

She donated the collection, which includes works by artists like Hepworth, to the people of Orkney before her death.

Visitors to the centre, which overlooks Stromness harbour, will also be able to see works by Ben Nicholson and Naum Gabo among others.

The gallery is also presenting a changing programme of local, national and international exhibitions and events.
