Peterhead nets 100m fish value
Peterhead Harbour
The fishing industry is vital to the Peterhead economy
The value of fish landings at Peterhead has reached more than 100m this year for the first time ever.

Peterhead Port Authority said it was a "remarkable" achievement given the tough operating climate.

Chief executive John Wallace said: "There can be no doubt that the record results achieved in 2006 are a great boost for the port."

The news comes amid much industry disappointment at cuts imposed on the Scottish fleet after European talks.

'Fishermen rewarded'

Mr Wallace said: "This is a banner year for the port with fish landing values in excess of 100m for the first time in its history.

"This is particularly remarkable given the tough operating climate in which these businesses operate.

"The consistent high price paid at Peterhead has, some would say, at last rewarded the fishermen with a return they deserve for their product."

Peterhead Port Authority was formed by the merger of Peterhead Harbour Trustees and Peterhead Bay Authority in January.
