Silence for Cairngorms climbers
Aberdeen University rugby team's minute silence

A minute's silence has been held for the two climbers who died in the Cairngorms.

Aberdeen University sports teams taking part in rugby, football, tennis and hockey on Wednesday afternoon observed the silence as a mark of respect.

Student Richard Hardy, 18, from Alton in Hampshire, and graduate Graeme Cooper, 23, from Aberdeen, died.

The pair had been taken to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness after being found by rescue teams on Monday.

The two climbers were about a mile from the Cairngorm ski area car park when they were discovered.

Investigation launched

The pair had been reported missing on Sunday after climbing in Coire an t-Sneachda.

Wind speeds would have resulted in temperatures as low as minus 20C overnight, rescuers said.

Aberdeen University has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of the two members of its climbing club.

Aberdeen University senior vice principal Prof Stephen Logan told BBC Scotland: "We have a significant number of experienced mountaineers in the club.

"As far as this incident is concerned we are trying to gather information about what happened."

Mr Hardy was a first year student studying for an MA in geography, and Mr Cooper had graduated in July with an MA in the same subject.

A condolence page on the climbing club's web page has already had dozens of comments.

Sports teams joined arms and bowed heads for the minute's silence at various venues in Aberdeen.
