The application, which has raised environmental concerns, was approved by Aberdeen City Council's planning committee.

However a motion for deferral to a meeting on 13 December was supported.

Management at the airport believe the 300m extension would open up new business and tourist opportunities and create hundreds of jobs.

Aberdeen City Council's head of planning Dr Margaret Bochel had said in a report that the extension is needed for a "dynamic local economy".

She said objections on the grounds of the impact on climate change could not be used to refuse a planning application.

The Scottish Green Party and local residents have raised concerns about noise and pollution.
