Renewed calls for energy centre
Oil rig
The institute would be a major boost for Aberdeen
Fresh calls have been made for the government's new energy institute to be based in Aberdeen.

A report on the industry's impact in the north east showed spending on the UK continental shelf soared by $3bn.

The figure has gone up over the last five years ,despite rapidly diminishing oil reserves.

The research was commissioned by the Aberdeen City and Shire Economic Forum as part of the strategy to lure the energy research institute to Aberdeen.

Development manager Rita Stephen said the area had done well from oil but the new institute could help it do even better from renewable energy.
