The plane overshot the runway into an area of grass

City Star Airlines, which operated the flight from Norway, said it had suspended flights until further notice.

Friday afternoon's flight to Oslo and the return were expected go ahead after another airline's plane was chartered.

The Air Accidents Investigation Branch was examining the plane as airport operations resumed as normal.

The incident, which disrupted evening flights in and out of Aberdeen, happened at about 2100 BST on Thursday.

The City Star 30-seat twin propeller Dornier 328 was travelling from Stavanger.

The airline said that it was too early to say what might have caused the incident.

Passengers were asked to contact the company for further information about flights.

Three Grampian Fire and Rescue units and two ambulances were called out but were not required.

Airport reopened

One male passenger, who did not want to be named, said: "It came in to land and we were put into the brace position.

"The pilot had everyone under control and we were treated really well."

City Star Airlines spokeswoman Eleanor Jones told the BBC Scotland news website at the airport: "The aircraft containing 16 passengers and three crew overran the end of the runway.

"We would confirm that no passengers or crew were injured during this incident.

"We have their welfare as our priority."

The airport's runway had been closed while flights were diverted to Edinburgh. It reopened at 2230 BST to clear a backlog of arrivals and departures.
