Damaged rail track 'to open next week'

Railway crew at Carrbridge
A railway crew begin clearing the line at Carrbridge

Work has started on removing a derailed freight train and repairing a railway track damaged in the incident.

A locomotive hauling eight bogies carrying containers came off tracks at Carrbridge railway station on Monday.

The train had two people on board. One person sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Services between Inverness and Perth have been disrupted. Network Rail said it hoped the affected line would be reopened early next week.

Buses have been taking passengers between Inverness and Aviemore.

The cause of the incident is being probed.

A spokesman for Network Rail said: "Because of the weather conditions it will probably be early next week before the line is reopened.

"The first of the containers are being lifted off the track.

"Engineers have dug down through the snow and found the track was damaged during the incident and this will be repaired at the same time as the lifting work."
