Items will be mounted on the bridge ramparts |
Knitters in Scotland and from all over the world have been asked to provide knitted and crocheted items to be draped over the Skye Bridge. Newly-formed Skye and Lochalsh arts group, Aos, plans to use the display to help mark Homecoming Scotland. The Scottish Government-backed homecoming initiative is celebrating all things Scottish. Aos described its project as a piece of "guerrilla knitting" and said the items would be mounted on the ramparts. It has invited people to send large knitted, or crocheted, panels, scarves and smaller rectangles. Fastest knitter The Skye Bridge extends to 570 metres, but the full length of the crossing from the mainland to the isle stretches to 1.5 miles with the Carrich Bridge included. Meanwhile, Scotland can boast to having the world's fastest knitter. Hazel Tindall, from Shetland, represented the UK at an international speed knitting contest in Minneapolis last year when she managed 262 stitches in three minutes. She had previously been crowned the world's fastest knitter with 255 stitches in three minutes in 2004. Famous faces seen relaxing while knitting have included actress Sarah Jessica Parker and singer Geri Halliwell. Russell Crowe, star of the film Gladiator, has also been photographed knitting between shoots. In 2006, a student created a life-size Ferrari from 12 miles of yarn.
