Highland Council has agreed to grant Prince Charles the honour of the freedom of Caithness.

The local authority will host a special award ceremony later in the year.

Council convenor Sandy Park said the authority was delighted to bestow the rarely granted honour to the prince in the year of his 60th birthday.

He added that since the death of the Queen Mother, the prince had maintained a strong connection with her former private residence at the Castle of Mey.

Mr Park added that Prince Charles had continued to be actively involved in promoting the area at a national level through his North Highland Initiative.

The Queen Mother was granted the Freedom of Wick in 1956 and The Freedom of the District of Caithness in 1990.
