Councillors have backed supermarket giant Asda's plan to build its first store in the Highlands. Highland Council's Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey committee voted 15-2 in favour of outline permission for a site at Slackbuie, Inverness.
Council planning officials had recommended turning it down.
Among the main reasons given for refusal were going against planning policy, being of an "excessive scale" and congestion concerns.
Meanwhile, Tesco confirmed it had lodged a planning application with Highland Council for a town centre store in Tain, Ross-shire.
The planning application includes a 2,500 sq m store and a petrol filling station.
