Celebrations marking Glasgow's successful bid
Efforts look set to be made to boost the chances of Highland athletes of competing at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Highland Council's education, culture and sport committee will be asked to approve the launch of a working group to come up with ways of achieving that.

The group, made up of councillors and officials, would also draw up plans on how to help the area's elite athletes.

Glasgow beat Abuja in Nigeria to host the games.

In a report to Thursday's committee, Highland Council community development manager Graham Watson set out the proposed remit of the new working group.

'Hard work'

It would be tasked with producing a draft plan to respond to the Scottish strategy on sport - Reaching Higher - and maximising the north region's participation in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

This would include trying to raise the chances of athletes taking part in Scottish teams, and possibly other teams, and local people being volunteers at the games.

The working group would also look at how to increase active lifestyles and ensure elite athletes have access to sporting facilities while preparing for Olympic and Commonwealth games.

It has been estimated that it will cost 288m to stage the sporting event in Glasgow, with most of the funding coming from the Scottish Government.

Louise Martin, chairman of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland, said the secret to the city's successful bid had been "hard work and a really, really good team".
