Leaders elected to north councils

Sandy Park is a councillor for Nairn
Nairn independent councillor Sandy Park has been elected as convener of Highland Council.

Nationalist Jean Urquhart, who represents Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh, was named vice-convener following the vote.

In the Western Isles, Alec MacDonald has been re-elected to stand as convener for a record third term.

Angus Campbell, the councillor for Stornoway South, has been re-elected as vice-convener.

The 35-strong independent group on Highland Council agreed to go into coalition with the SNP's 17 members after the local authority elections.

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) is under independent control.
