Park board sticks by house rules
Cairngorms National Park sign
Affordable housing is an issue in the park
The new chief of Cairngorms National Park Authority says its board is still firmly behind plans to restrict who can and cannot buy houses in the park.

Former Highland Council convener David Green is leaving the chairman's job at the Crofters' Commission to take over as park chairman.

Under his predecessor, Andrew Thin, the board proposed rules to help local young first-time buyers and workers.

Mr Green said these still had backing, although the issue was open to debate.

He said: "I think in principle the board is agreed that they are supporting the idea of residency criteria.

"But having said that they have still left the door open to have further detailed discussions and consultation on the matter and I know they are due to consider it at the next board in October."

Council opposition

Mr Green added: "They recognise that there is a huge issue about affordable housing not just in Cairngorms park but right across Scotland.

"It is a big issue providing the opportunity for young folk in particular who live and work in the park to have residency in the park."

Highland councillors voted to oppose the proposed restrictions last month.

Council officials had recommended that the planning committee oppose the draft plan for the park.

Planners said it ignored the economic contribution made by those who commute to jobs elsewhere.

Mr Thin is to become chairman of Scottish National Heritage.
