Educational courses to 'woo men'
Iain Morrison
Iain Morrison hopes the new range of courses will appeal to men
College courses for men are to be offered across the Highlands and Islands to help address a gender imbalance in higher education.

Scottish Funding Council research found that women were 25% more likely to enter higher education than men.

In response, the UHI Millennium Institute has created a number of courses designed to appeal to men.

Theses include a canoe-building course in Kinlochleven, shinty in Dunoon, and wine appreciation in Skye.

There will also be a golf course in Dornoch, IT classes in Aviemore, a core skills programme for seafarers in Orkney and a DIY wireless course in Mallaig and Fort William.

Iain Morrison, who heads up the project, said there were a number of reasons why men were not participating in further and higher education.

"There are wide socio-economic factors at play such as peer pressure, family background and expectations, availability of role models and subject choice at school," he said.
