Iain Morrison hopes the new range of courses will appeal to men |
College courses for men are to be offered across the Highlands and Islands to help address a gender imbalance in higher education. Scottish Funding Council research found that women were 25% more likely to enter higher education than men.
In response, the UHI Millennium Institute has created a number of courses designed to appeal to men.
Theses include a canoe-building course in Kinlochleven, shinty in Dunoon, and wine appreciation in Skye.
There will also be a golf course in Dornoch, IT classes in Aviemore, a core skills programme for seafarers in Orkney and a DIY wireless course in Mallaig and Fort William.
Iain Morrison, who heads up the project, said there were a number of reasons why men were not participating in further and higher education.
"There are wide socio-economic factors at play such as peer pressure, family background and expectations, availability of role models and subject choice at school," he said.
