UHI Millennium Institute could have degree-awarding powers by 2007 |
A deal has been struck to help get the embryonic University of the Highlands and Islands off the ground. Three Scottish universities have thrown their weight behind plans to make the UHI Millennium institution a fully fledged university within two years.
Representatives from Edinburgh, Strathclyde and Aberdeen universities will work with the institution to help speed up its development and status.
It is hoped the plans will help keep talent in the Highlands and Islands.
The Scottish Executive set up the institute four years ago and it already has five thousand students at 15 locations across the region.
The backing from the external universities means it could become a university, with degree-awarding powers, by 2007.
The aim is to create cultural hubs and a research base which would lead to spin-off companies and local jobs.
