Motorway footbridge safety fears

Pedestrians have been risking their lives crossing a footbridge over Scotland's busiest motorway closed last year on safety grounds, police said.

Hillington footbridge crosses the M8 west of Glasgow between junctions 26 Hillington and junction 27 Arkleston.

It was shut in September after a collision involving a heavy vehicle.

Police said vandals had damaged temporary fencing, putting vulnerable pedestrians and children who might stray onto the bridge at risk.

Road maintenance firm Amey said the fence had been vandalised on numerous occasions.

It now plans to erect a 2.4m high vandal and climb-proof security fence to prevent further access.

Sgt Alistair Forsyth, from Strathclyde Police's traffic management department, said: "This footbridge has been closed as its current condition has been found to be unsafe for use by the public."
