Stockline inquiry venue unveiled

The inquiry will consider facts leading up to the tragedy

Victims' families and survivors of the Stockline factory explosion have been shown the venue of the public inquiry.

Maryhill Community Centre, in the north west of Glasgow, is close to the site of the factory, which was operated by ICL Plastics Ltd.

It also provided refuge for family and friends of the victims at the time.

Nine people died and 33 were hurt when the factory collapsed on 11 May, 2004. Liquefied petroleum gas, which escaped from old pipework, caused the blast.

Factory owners ICL Plastics and ICL Tech were fined a total of �400,000 for health and safety breaches last year.

Bereaved families

The inquiry, which will be hosted by the Lord Justice Clerk Lord Gill, has no power to determine civil or criminal liability.

The first stage will consider the "factual narrative" which led to the tragedy.

The second stage, which will consider recommendations, is scheduled to start on 21 October.

Maryhill Community Centre has been completely refurbished for the inquiry.

Separate rooms have been provided for bereaved families and those who survived, to enable them to follow proceedings.

Both rooms have plasma screens which will relay the activities in the Reid Hall and also any documents shown to witnesses.
