James filmed the clip in Glasgow and edited the track in his bedroom |
A degree show film at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) has attracted huge interest on the internet by remixing a Radiohead song using obsolete 1980s technology. James Houston's four-minute film, Big Ideas (Don't Get Any), is a video and track remix of the band's single Nude from their album In Rainbows. But unusually it blends sounds from a dot matrix printer, ZX Spectrum, old hard drives and a scanner. The 21-year-old from North Lanarkshire is now picking over job offers. James made the clip at a small studio in Glasgow by carefully programming each piece of equipment. Once completed, he uploaded it to video-sharing sites You Tube and Vimeo. David Smith, a close friend of Radiohead and a lecturer in Media and Technology in London, thought the film was fantastic and informed the band. Bassist Colin Greenwood agreed and posted a link to the film on the Radiohead website. 'Amazing projects' This level of exposure catapulted the film to number three in the music videos of the week (globally) chart on You Tube as well as the number three top favourite video. James, who lives in Airdrie, has since been interviewed on US radio and invited to show his film in Amsterdam, as well as at a host of UK music festivals. "I've been completely overwhelmed by the huge response to the film," he said. "This was a small video for the GSA which was edited in my bedroom with my dog at my feet and now it's grown out of control. The video has attracted huge interest on Youtube and Vimeo |
"I've had over 3,000 really lovely emails from people all around the world, been offered a record deal although I'm not a musician and been asked to get involved in lots of other amazing projects." Paul Stickley, head of visual communication at GSA, said: "James' film plays with musical conventions and structure and opens up a set of discussions regarding the nature of visual communication, graphic design and music. "His film focuses on cultural identity and way we adopt an emotional relationship with obsolete technologies. "For example the Sinclair ZX Spectrum has attracted an audience that has a nostalgic affection for this hardware. "The film, with its subtlety of composition and sophistication of colour, synchronisation of audio and musicianship, deserves the recognition that it has attracted across the world." Big Ideas (Don't Get Any) is on show in the visual communications department at GSA until 21 June as part of the 2008 Degree Show.
