Secondary school pupils across Glasgow face a �50 fine if they are caught dropping litter in the latest phase of the Clean Glasgow campaign. Children aged 12 to 16 are being targeted by enforcement officers patrolling schools.
Fines will be posted out retrospectively to offender's homes with a letter to their parents.
Steven Purcell, leader of Glasgow City Council, said he recognised some may view the scheme as controversial.
He said: "We hope by issuing fixed penalty notices to the minority of under-16s engaging in this type of anti-social behaviour, we can continue to make an impact to the cleanliness of our city."
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said he hoped the number of fines issued would be very low.
If the fine is not paid, the offender will be asked to undertake community work and could ultimately be reported to the Children's Reporter.
