Glasgow City Council is set to approve its budget

The Labour-run Glasgow City Council will receive an extra �7.8m from the Scottish Government after agreeing the move at a budget meeting.

The level for Band D properties will remain at �1,213.

The council budget shows the local authority aims to save �43m over two years through what it describes as "service reform and efficiencies".

This includes reducing free school bus travel for secondary school pupils, saving �640,000.

The threshold for eligibility will be extended from those living a two-mile distance away to three miles.

Councillor Stephen Curran, the city council's treasurer, said: "This budget is good news for every household in Glasgow - from those in the highest valuation bands to pensioners and those on low incomes, who often face the greatest problems coping with rising bills.

"However, our freeze in council tax does not have to mean a freeze on investment.

"Despite a very tight settlement, we will not only hold council tax at its current rate, but also deliver a programme that reforms and invests in services for the good of our communities."

The �1.54bn budget includes extra investment of �3.5m.

This includes �1m to create one primary-age and one secondary-age learning centre for vulnerable children and young people.
