Fratellis singer in college visit
 Jon Lawler at Cumbernauld college
The Fratellis singer was impressed by the new facilities at the college
Musician Jon Lawer, frontman of Scottish band the Fratellis, has opened a new studio at his local college.

Cumbernauld College spent 300,000 updating the technology department's audio and media facilities.

Students are now able to record and edit both music and film to industry standard.

The singer took part in a question and answer session, giving students his perspective on working in the music business.

Mr Lawler is currently on tour with the band, but took time out to visit the college and spend time with students.

The Fratellis are enjoying huge success and scooped the best breakthrough act prize at the Brit awards earlier this year.

Like many of the students at Cumbernauld College, the singer was a pupil at St Maurice's secondary school in the town.

He told students he wished he had been able to work with good quality recording equipment when he was just starting out in his musical career.

He said: "The equipment in the department is fantastic. I had a go with the students showing me how to work it. They are already professionals."

Martin McGuire, college principal, said: "The appearance of Jon Fratelli added a real 'rock n roll' atmosphere to our opening.

"His question and answer session, as well as his willingness to spend so much time signing autographs and posing for photographs, was much appreciated."
