Police officers to patrol subway
Stewards on the Glasgow Subway
Stewards already operate on subway trains in Glasgow
Security on Glasgow's underground will be provided for the first time by two full-time police officers.

British Transport Police has joined forces with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) to improve security in the Subway's 15 stations and on trains.

Community officers John McCrone and Jack Mitchell will take up their posts on a two-month trial from Wednesday. Donnie Macleod, head of security with SPT, said: "Passenger safety is of the utmost importance to us."

Supt Ronnie Mellis, area commander for the British Transport Police in Scotland, said: "Our officers will bring a wealth of experience in policing this environment to the Glasgow Subway."

The officers will patrol the subway and provide policing during major events such as football matches.
