'E-ballot' for housing transfer
Hand on a computer mouse
Council tenants will be able to vote with the click of a mouse
Tenants in Renfrewshire will be able to vote on housing transfer over the internet by e-ballot.

Communities Minister Malcolm Chisholm will officially launch the first ballot of its kind in Scotland with Renfrewshire Housing Association.

Renfrewshire Council hopes the move will encourage as many tenants as possible to cast their vote.

Residents will decide if 14,300 homes and services will transfer to the not-for-profit housing association.

The local authority said it will unlock investment of 1bn over 30 years.

Mr Chisholm said: "Housing transfer to RHA would pave the way to an unprecedented 1bn package of home improvements over 30 years and faster repairs for Renfrewshire tenants, as well as a five-year binding guarantee restricting rent rises to the inflation rate.

"Renfrewshire Council's 154m housing debt currently costs tenants 36p in the pound in rent.

"If the transfer goes ahead that money can be spent on investment and keeping rents down."
