Glasgow will find out next year if it has won the race
Scotland's bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow has taken a step forward with the launch of an athletes' commission.

Former runner Yvonne Murray will be among those on the new commission, as well as cyclist Chris Hoy and runner Lee McConnell.

The 2014 Athletes Commission will look at every aspect of Scotland's bid prior to it being submitted next year.

Venues, the village, transport and the cultural programme will be examined.

The aim is to have commissioners sign off the bid as athlete-centred.

The final decision on the host of the 2014 Games will be made in Sri Lanka in November 2007.

Sports Minister Patricia Ferguson said: "This group of Scottish sporting heroes bring with them knowledge of major games and an understanding of what athletes need in order to be at their best.

"We all want to win the race for 2014. With the help of the athletes and the backing of Scots everywhere, it is a race we can win."

Cycling champion Chris Hoy said: "I am proud to be involved in the Athletes Commission.

"The commission is important because it allows us, the athletes, to offer guidance and input as Glasgow's bid takes shape."
