The university is planning new purpose-built facilities |
The University of Strathclyde has confirmed plans to move its teacher training campus to a city centre site. Principal Professor Andrew Hamnett said the Faculty of Education would move from its current Jordanhill campus to a new site in George Street, Glasgow.
He said the 14,500 sq metre building would have capacity for 2,500 students and should be ready for use by 2010.
Prof Hamnett said more student teachers trained at the university than anywhere else in the UK.
The Jordanhill campus, which houses students studying social work, teacher training, music and journalism studies, is being sold following a decision by the university court in January.
Prof Hamnett, said: "This is an exciting time for the university and the new building will bring together our staff, students and research for the first time.
"The new site will allow us to create a building of the future, which will be specially designed around the faculty's needs.
"More students train at our Faculty of Education to be teachers than anywhere else in Britain and we are committed to excellence.
"The new building will help us ensure our students get the best, not only from teaching, learning and research, but from first-class facilities."
The new site is located directly opposite the Graham Hills building on the main John Anderson campus, where 12,600 students are based.
