An environmental group has launched an emergency fundraising appeal for its legal challenge to the M74 motorway extension in Glasgow. Friends of the Earth Scotland hopes to raise at least �25,000 in donations or loans ahead of next week's court case.
FoE Scotland said it required funds as the group could face a large legal bill if it loses the case. That in turn would jeopardise jobs and projects.
The �500m extension would be Britain's biggest motorway building project.
Duncan McLaren, FoE Scotland's chief executive, said: "The Scottish Executive appears insistent that this motorway will be built, despite the scheme being roundly rejected by an independent public inquiry.
"The only way left open to us to prevent this waste of up to one billion pounds of taxpayers' money is in the courts.
"In court we have the chance to win, but we can't yet afford to lose. This is why are launching an emergency Legal Defence Fund appeal."
The appeal, an unprecedented move by the group, was marked by the unveiling of a new advertising billboard in south Glasgow.
