Young donors get a sneak preview of the Kelvingrove collection |
An appeal for funding to refurbish one of Scotland's flagship art galleries and museums has attracted more than 5,500 contributors. The public raised hundreds of thousands of pounds and those who donated money will have their names inscribed on the Kelvingrove Donor Wall in Glasgow.
The appeal closed on Tuesday and Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will re-open on 11 July after a 28m refit.
Many children donated while others pledged cash in memory of loved ones.
More than 8,650 names will appear in Kelvingrove's main hall. Of that number 3,050 names will be on in-memoriam boards.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council described the public appeal as an "overwhelming success".
He said: "The appeal has received an innumerable number of touching stories from people who courted, worked or simply enjoyed visiting Kelvingrove in the past.
"The amount raised from the public appeal greatly exceeded the expectations of the trustees."
