Festival bars told to measure up

Licensees are being urged to make sure they measure up

Pubs, restaurants and hotels across Edinburgh are being checked to ensure they are not giving festival goers short measures.

Trading Standards officers will be visiting licensed premises, including those set up temporarily, to ensure patrons are getting a fair deal.

During last year's festival, a quarter of all measures were found to be short.

Licensees must sell spirits like gin, rum, vodka and whisky in 25ml or 35ml measures.

They should also indicate quantities by which wine by the glass is sold, whether it is 125ml, 175ml, or both.

Last year's campaign led to two prosecutions in the city.

Local councillor Robert Aldridge said: "Edinburgh is proud to play host to The Fringe and Edinburgh International Festival. It is important that, during this time of celebration, consumers can expect to get what they pay for."

"It is important that the legislation in this area is rigorously enforced, to ensure that consumer confidence remains high.

"It is a criminal offence to serve short measures and licensees are encouraged to ensure that employees have received thorough training regarding delivery of the drinks they serve."
