Survey to ensure bars measure up

Serving inaccurate measures is a criminal offence
An operation is being launched to ensure that bars, clubs and restaurants in Stirling and Clackmannanshire are treating drinkers fairly.

Trading Standards officials will be making surprise visits to licensed premises to ensure operators are not breaching spirit measure laws.

Licencees providing inaccurate measures can be hit with a fine of up to 5,000.

The move is part of a Scotland-wide initiative to provide a snapshot of liquor measures from public houses.

Fair measures

Most establishments sell spirits by 25ml quantities, although some choose a 35ml measure.

The operation, which has been dubbed Fair Measure Fortnight, will take place between 31 July and 18 August.

Stirling Council Trading Standards manager Neil Chalmers said he hoped the public and licensed trade would welcome the project.

"It is in everyone's interest to see that measures are sold accurately throughout Scotland, especially over the summer when there are so many visitors in our pubs and restaurants," he said.
