Lothian Buses increases its fares

Lothian Buses will increase its adult single fare by 10p

Lothian Buses is planning to raise the cost of an adult single fare next month due to rising tax and fuel costs.

The price will rise from 1 to 1.10 from 6 April. Child fares, daysaver tickets and Ridacards will all be unaffected.

Bus officials have stressed the single fare has not risen for two years.

Lothian Buses last put up adult single prices in March 2006, when prices rose from 80p to 1. The new rise is likely to earn the company about 2.9m.

Ian Craig, Lothian Buses managing director, said: "The 1 single fare has been in place for two years, but increasing costs, particularly of diesel, and the 2p per litre tax increase in October 2007, coupled with reduced payments for carrying concessionary passengers means we are forced to increase adult single fares to balance the books."

Pilmar Smith, chairman of Lothian Buses, said: "Our Ridacard and DayTicket prices are being frozen so regular passengers will not be affected, neither will children, as the 60p child fare is not changing either."
