About 90% of domestic abuse incidents are witnessed by a child |
Almost 3,000 young people saw a parent suffering domestic abuse last year, according to support teams. The figure has been revealed as part of a major conference on domestic abuse in which 150 teenagers have been invited to share their views on the problem.
The event, at Rothes Halls, Glenrothes, is the culmination of a six-week programme in 11 schools across Fife.
A group from a school in Kirkcaldy has made a hard-hitting film to show how domestic abuse affects children.
Forgotten victims
It has been claimed that 90% of domestic abuse incidents are witnessed by a child.
Sheila Noble, of Fife Domestic Abuse Partnership, told the BBC Scotland news website: "Sometimes young people are almost the forgotten victims.
"In fact, they're hearing, they're seeing, they're getting caught up in domestic abuse."
The event is targeting 13-year-olds from a range of schools.
As well as trying to highlight the problem, it is hoped the conference will help some of the children who have experienced abuse.
Pauline McGee, children's abuse support co-ordinator at Fife Council, said: "Lots of young people won't talk to teachers, won't seek help but do seek peer support so it's crucial they know how to get support from one another and that the secrecy is taken away from it."
St Andrews High School student Megan McAulay, aged 14, made the hard-hitting video.
She said: "I would try to encourage them [victims] to get some help, phone a child line or speak to an adult."
