New bus station may have no buses
Dunfermline Bus Station
A temporary bus station has been operating on James Street
The biggest operator of public transport in Fife has said it might not use a new flagship 4m bus station.

The facility is part of a major regeneration project for the centre of Dunfermline, which also includes an expansion to the main shopping centre.

With only three months until work is completed, Stagecoach has said it still has not decided whether its services will operate from the new bus station.

A local councillor said the response from Stagecoach was "ridiculous".

Time trials

The bus operator has said it is currently working out whether its timetables could be altered so that services could stop at the bus station.

Until it has completed its research, Stagecoach said it could not commit itself to the facility.

Operations Director Steve Walker said: "We are currently trialling potential running times for services using the new bus station.

"It is important to gain operational experience and once the bus station opens, we will be able to review this on an ongoing basis.

The Queen Anne Street bus station is part of a 100m investment project in the town centre.

A new Debenhams store is also being built as an extension to the Kingsgate Shopping Centre.

The old bus station was closed in 2006 to make way for the work and temporary stops were created on and around James Street.

Dunfermline Central Councillor, Willie Sullivan, told the BBC Scotland news website: "I think it's ridiculous these private monopolies holding the citizens of Dunfermline to ransom.

"It is the citizens who own the roads and they have to got to acknowledge that."

Stagecoach is the single biggest operator of buses in the town and if it decided not use the bus station, there would be significant reduction in its use.

However Fife Council has insisted it would not become a white elephant.

Cllr Tony Martin, chair of the environment and transportation committee, said: "Certainly a significant number of out-of-town and intercity services and all services from the west of Fife will be using the bus station.

"We're continuing discussions with Stagecoach. We want to be flexible and, above all, make sure that bus services meet passengers' needs."
